This drawing is one of a number of preparatory designs for A London Ballet, which was apparently never staged, but of which large finished populous paintings were sold to leading galleries. Freedman's other studies in this range are dated 1926 or 1927, and the works were mentioned in a Times review of an exhibition of Freedman's work in 1929, which notes his 'racy designs'.
We are grateful to Simon Lawrence for the above note.
