As a war artist attached to the Admiralty, Stephen Bone recorded the Battle of Dunkirk, (the defence and evacuation of British and Allied forces in Europe, which took place from 26 May – 4 June 1940. and the Normandy landings in 1944.
Bone also painted a number of paintings recording celebrated British ships - HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, ordered in 1758, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. She is best known as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1922, she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth.
The viewpoint is from the rail of the poop deck on HMS Victory looking aft.across the water of Portsmouth Harbour. The windows and gilded roofs of the officers' cabins protruding below the decorative lantern at the end of the ship. There are are a couple of barrage balloons in the air, suggesting wartime.
