Horton opposed WW1 as a capitalists’ war using the working classes as cannon-fodder, and was more in tune with the French Revolution; indeed during in WW2, his readiness to don uniform demonstrates that armed struggle, provided it was directed against the forces of capital, did not offend him per se.
