Gill Clarke has suggested that this scene depicts the artist's two sisters Jessie and 'Midge' in their home The
Cedars at Strood. They are possible sewing which was a favourite pastime. Dunbar often sketched at home using her
family as models.
Margaret Goodwin, from whose collection
this drawing came, was a friend and contemporary of Evelyn Dunbar's at
the School of
Drawing and Painting, Royal College of Art - both attended the School
from 1929 to 1933 and remained remained friends thereafter. It is
recorded that they holidayed
together, with Mrs Gwynne-Jones
(mother of Allan Gwynne-Jones), at Strawberry cottage, possibly around
the time war was declared, and in April 1941, in the Lake District,
with Roger Folley, (Dunbar's future husband) and Glynn (William) Burton.
