Gill Clarke has suggested that this scene depicts the artist's two sisters Jessie and 'Midge' in their home The Cedars at Strood. They are possible sewing which was a favourite pastime.  Dunbar often sketched at home using her family as models.

Margaret Goodwin, from whose collection this drawing came, was a friend and contemporary of Evelyn Dunbar's at the School of Drawing and Painting,  Royal College of Art  - both attended the School from 1929 to 1933 and remained remained  friends thereafter.  It is recorded that they holidayed together, with Mrs Gwynne-Jones (mother of Allan Gwynne-Jones), at Strawberry cottage, possibly around the time war was declared, and  in  April 1941, in the Lake District, with Roger Folley, (Dunbar's future husband) and Glynn (William) Burton.

We are grateful to Gill Clarke for assistance.
