Provenance: Charles Mahoney. In a white reeded frame. In all likelihood Special Delivery, a drawing of a huge birthday cake being manhandled towards Mahoney’s front door (was Dunbar - in her fancy - inside it?) is a birthday greeting from Dunbar to Charles Mahoney, her mural tutor at the Royal College of Art and later her colleague and lover. Mahoney’s birthday was on November 18th (1903); as Dunbar and Mahoney had separated, with some rancour, in the early autumn of 1937, it’s likely that she drew this for any one of his birthdays during the halcyon years of their association, 1933-36.
