This drawing, which has been squared for enlargement, is a ‘working sketch’ in which the details of the groups of figures have been carefully worked out. In its evident geometric construction the drawing perfectly fulfilled the requirements of the Rome Scholarship Competition. However, the mysterious receding landscape background from a high viewpoint shows that Sorrell’s artistic imagination was already emerging.
