William E C Morgan (1903-1979)

William Evan Charles Morgan was born in London, England on 19 October 1903 and studied at Camberwell School of Art in London (1920-22), and at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1922-24). In 1924 he was awarded the Prix de Rome Scholarship enabling him to continue his studies in Italy. He subsequently worked primarily as an etcher and engraver. In 1927 engravings he submitted to the International Exhibition of Etchings at the Art Institute of Chicago were awarded the Art Institute of Chicago's Logan Medal and its first-purchase prize, on the strength of which the Chicago Society of Etchers granted him active membership. In 1932 Morgan and his family took up residence on the estate of one of his patrons at Ardtornich, Morven in Argyll, Scotland, where he painted and did some teaching.
