After the First World War, Percy Horton resumed his artistic education at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, London, (1919-20). It was at this time that Horton first experienced the work of Paul Cézanne at the ‘Modern French Painting’ exhibition held at the Mansard Gallery, London, 1919. Cézanne would have a profound influence upon Horton's work, particularly in the landscapes he produced during the 1920's. 

Horton was later appointed the Master of Drawing at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, in 1949. His students there included R. B. Kitaj, who remembered Horton fondly for having 'really turned me on to Cézanne'.
