Bathsheba was a theme which Mahoney was especially drawn to and he explored in a series of paintings in 1950s. 

Again it provided an opportunity for exploring the relationship between man and nature. 

Mahoney’s admiration for “Douanier” Rousseau is apparent in these works.

​The setting for this composition was possibly constructed from observation of the lily ponds at Kew.
