Bathsheba was a theme which Mahoney was especially drawn to and he explored in a series of paintings in 1950s.
Again it provided an opportunity for exploring the relationship between man and nature.
Mahoney’s admiration for “Douanier” Rousseau is apparent in these works.
The setting for this composition was possibly constructed from observation of the lily ponds at Kew.
