The silverpoint technique, in which the artist uses a silver stylus to leave a linear trace, was introduced at the Slade by Alphonse Legros, a former Professor at the School and major figure in the 19th century silverpoint revival. A natural extension of Knights interest in Renaissance drawings, the technique required more precise craftsmanship than pencil and allowed for a subtler rendition of light and shade. This sheet of studies probably dates to Monnington's student days at the Slade School of Fine Art.
