Provenance: The Artist's Studio

Pears was arguably the greatest marine artist of his generation - and excelled in painting night scenes and scenes of combat.  Both elements are found in this composition.
The plane is a Blohm & Voss Ha 139B/Umbau. Only three 139s were built, and only one was converted to having a glazed nose (which is visible in the picture). The RN vessel is a Motor Gun Boat but it does not have any identifying features that allow class or build to be identified.

We are grateful to Ian Jack and Oliver Bratton for assistance.
