Painting on silk was often associated with the production of designs for fans - still much in vogue around the turn of the century. But silk as a ground also attracted artist for the quality of brilliance it gave to the palette and richness of contrast. It was technically challenging - and fragile; few examples of Muirhead Bone using it are known.
