This scrap of a portrait head shows the extraordinary talent that Muirhead Bone had for the medium of charcoal; especially in exploiting its soft contours for creating flesh tones and rich areas of shade.
He was appointed as one of Britain’s first official war artists, in May 1916, and as a consequence his small black and white war time drawings were amongst the most widely reproduced images in Britain in the first half of the 20th century.
