As a war artist attached to the Admiralty, Stephen Bone recorded the Battle of Dunkirk, (the defence and evacuation of British and Allied forces in Europe, which took place  from 26 May – 4 June 1940. and the Normandy landings in 1944. 

The viewport shows Dover harbour with the 'little ships' (arrowed in the picture) returning from Dunkirk in the dawn light. The picture looks east. The finished picture, if there was one based on this sketch,  probably had some pink in the sky.
