Having completed the school hall panels, Dunbar undertook a mural panorama of Hilly Fields, the area around Brockley School. At each end of her 12 metre mural she placed allegorical female ‘bookend’ figures, modelled, as in in this preliminary study, by her sisters Jessie and Marjorie. As is often typical in Dunbar’s sheets of sketches, other objects, like the kettle, have no connection with the main subject.
We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
