Provenance: The Artist's Family; thence by descent

Adzes were used to shape planks of wood and to hollow out tree-trunks.  Leighton’s crossed-out note is not all clear, but “pride in care” is still discernible. Leighton had an enormous respect for tools and their skilled users. Leighton may have made this study when  in Provence ( or in Yugoslavia) where she made engravings of Treading Grapes and The Grape Harvest (bpl 55 & 56).

We are grateful to David Leighton for assistance.
