William Dunbar, a crofter’s son from Cromdale, Morayshire, took advantage
of an 1870s apprenticeship scheme for young Scots and bound himself to a Reading tailor. He prospered, bought the business and eventually sold it prior to setting up a similar business in the Medway Valley in 1908. He died in 1932 at the age of 70.
