Cranberry, issued in an edition of 75, was published on p. 73 of “Where Land Meets the Sea”, New York, Rineheart & Co., 1954.  Along with Henry David Thoreau’s “Cape Cod”, Leighton’s book has become a classic, a celebration of the people and activities of Cape Cod through sweeping wood block line work and embracing prose.  Subjects observed by Leighton included the fishermen who gain faith and dignity from the Blessing of the Fleet, the berry man who cherishes his bushes and the berry woman who delights in the sweet secrecy of a private stand of bushes. In these observations of friends and neighbors, Leighton sought to depict and illuminate universal truths.
