Literature: Gardeners’ Choice, by Evelyn Dunbar and Charles Mahoney, with a previously unpublished preface by Edward Bawden and with a new afterword by Christopher Campbell-Howes, Persephone Books, London 2015. The hobble-skirted and elegant lady seen here (on page 39 of Gardener’s Choice) hammering in a stake to support some straying black-eyed susans (or similar) is hardly Florence Dunbar, who dressed entirely appropriately for the garden. Maybe she is a neighbour.

We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
