Literature: Gardeners’ Choice, by Evelyn Dunbar and Charles Mahoney, with a previously unpublished preface by Edward Bawden and with a new afterword by Christopher Campbell-Howes, Persephone Books, London 2015. The vignette of a planting-line (a peg and a reel of tarred twine to ensure planting of seedlings or seeds in a straight line is redolent of the other garden implements shown as vignettes in Gardeners’ Choice; worn smooth by years of devoted use and careful cleaning after each use. This vignette appears on page 71 and at the very end, as though Dunbar and Mahoney were using it to draw a final straight line under their collaborative effort, in every sense.

We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
