Provenance: The Artist's Estate

Literature: Gardeners’ Choice, by Evelyn Dunbar and Charles Mahoney, with a previously unpublished preface by Edward Bawden and with a new afterword by Christopher Campbell-Howes, Persephone Books, London 2015. The house and greenhouse can probably be identified with Steellands, Ticehurst, near Tunbridge Wells, where Dunbar’s aunt and uncle Clara and Stead Cowling lived. Both were keen gardeners and may well have cultivated some of the plants featured in Gardener’s Choice.
