The 1940's proved to be a formative decade for Rowtnree.  As a conscientous objector Kenneth could not become an official war artist, but the Recording Britain scheme miraculously employed him.  He chose to record Yorkshire, his birthplace, Essex, where he lived.  Derbyshire, where an area to be flooded by a new resevoir needed recording,  and Wales, where he illustrated the King Penguin book A Prospect of Wales,' Chronology by Diana Rowntree, in John Milner, Kenneth Rowntree, Lund Humphries, 2002, p 84

A son, Adam was born in 1942.  A daugheter Sasha was born in 1947.

The appointment of Rowntree to run the Mural Painting department at the Royal College of Art in 1950, by  Robin Darwin, resulted in a move to London (1950-1970).
