Provenance: The Artists Family

The silverpoint technique, in which the artist uses a silver stylus to leave a linear trace, was introduced at the Slade by Alphonse Legros, a former Professor at the School and major figure in the 19th century silverpoint revival. A natural extension of Knights interest in Renaissance drawings, the technique required more precise craftsmanship than pencil and allowed for a subtler rendition of light and shade. 

 Knights drew flowers throughout her life - most notably in last last major painting, the Flight into Egypt which was set along a bank of spring flowers and foliage. When the artist Sir D. Y. Cameron saw these drawings, he admired their intensity of observation: 'The artist of today might laugh at my love and admiration of her work, so far removed from the spirit of our times he wrote. But it is timeless and of another world.'
