In 1959, Rowntree became Professor of Fine Art at Durham University. On his retirement in 1980 the retrospective in The Hatton Gallery (closely affiliated to Newcastle University and one of the main cultural centres in the North East) included 191 works, his largest exhibition.

The painted version of this work is in the collection of the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle.
