The courtyard of the British School at Rome, with its fountain decorated by Skeaping, was at the heart of school life and frequently the setting for group photographs of BSR students.
No longer a student at the BSR in 1937 Sorrell was revisiting Rome fuelled by an increasing interest in archeology. 1937 was the year that Alan Sorrell's first reconstruction drawing appeared in The Illustrated London News, leading to more commissions from Mortimer Wheeler for Maiden Castle and from Cyril Fox and Nash-Williams from the National Museum of Wales for the Roman town of Caerwent. In the same year Sorrell made a return visit to Rome, having been a scholar at The British School in Rome from 1928-1930.
