In its original papier mache laurel knull gilded frame
The model for this painting would appear to be the same as the model for Gore's Nude on a bed, 1910 (Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery).
The papier mache frame is of a type known to have been made by Nan
Hudson and Ethel Sands. Hudson and Sands were invited by Sickert to
join the Fitzroy Street Group in 1907, an invitation which reflected his eagerness to secure
their financial assistance and social connections as well as his admiration of
their artistic merits.
Spencer Frederick Gore was painter of landscapes, music-hall scenes and interiors, usually with
single figures. In 1904 Albert Rutherston introduced him to Walter Sickert at Dieppe;
and afterwards he associated in Fitzroy Street with Sickert,
Lucien Pissarro, Harold Gilman and Charles Ginner, becoming in 1911 a co-founder and first president of the Camden Town Group.
His
works show growing concern with pictorial construction, under the
influence of the Post-Impressionists and espeically Pointillism.
His work is rare on account of the fact that his career was cut short by his premature death - he died of pneumonia in 1914, aged thirty-six.
