This study relates to Palmers Royal College of Art  Diploma painting of 1936, In the Pub.  Palmer's paintings show the influence of the  generation of Slade and RCA students, who immediately preceded him, such as Stanley and Gilbert Spencer, James Bateman and Gerald Cooper.
