After studying at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein Moody became head master of Malvern School of Art, where he remained from 1935 to until 1962, when the post was taken on by his daughter Catherine. The Malvern Hills, were a constant source of inspiration for Moody. Although Moody is best known for his classical compositions and portraits he excelled in painting en plein air. The Harris Museum & Art Gallery in Preston held a retrospective of his work, The Last of the Classicists, in 1993. The theme was enlarged at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery in 2003 with the installation Underpainting and The Painting Methods of V H Moody, stemming from researches made by a group including Moody's daughter Catherine.
