Provenance: The Artists Estate
Mahoney frequently visited Great Bardfield at the invitation of his friend Edward Bawden. Bawden's Brick House was the focal point for a group of artists who lived or stayed in the village and bought Great Bardfield to National acclaim in the 1950's through hosting a number of celebrated 'open house' exhibitions. Other artists associated with Great Bardfield include John Aldridge, George Chapman, Stanley Clifford-Smith, Audrey Cruddas, Walter Hoyle, Michael Rothenstein, and Eric Ravilious (who lodged with Bawden at Brick House).
The view in this painting is from Hill House, on Great Bardfield High Street, looking North. The cottage seen on the left is now called the White House and (now altered but clearly the same building). The house at the end is still a shop - behind which is John Aldridges' Place House.
We are grateful to David Oelman for assistance.
