This watercolour is likely to have been produced before, later in 1940, Mahoney was  moved, to Ambleside in the Lake District as part of the staff of the Royal College of Art alongside Percy Horton and Gilbert Spencer.  Whilst at Ambleside, Mahoney became engaged to Dorothy Bishop, a  calligraphy tutor from the Design School of the Royal College of Art.  They were married in September 1941.
