Finney met his first wife Nita Patti Hayes in 1934, the year of this painting.
Of her he wrote: She had not only a realresponse to painting and a deep love of music but also because her whole hereditary was European. I find something about the European woman or Mediterranean women particularly attractive. My passion for drawing and painting remained unabated, in fact I sometimes believe that the muse was jealous of any other love that might diminish my absorption with my struggles to create something worthwhile in the world of the visual arts.
