Margaret Gere and her sister Edith were known as 'the masterful Miss Geres'. Although a versatile artist, of figure scenes, portraits, and landscapes, Gere’s domestic interiors are amongst her most engaging works, offering an intimate account of her artistic vision.

John Redman lived with the Payne and Gere families in their Cotswold home during the 2nd World War from 1940 to 1944. This home was a constant visiting location for a number of important artists and writers including Sir Stanley Spencer, Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, Sir William Rothenstein, George Bernard Shaw, John Betjeman and many others.  Redman  collected a comprehensive range of the Payne and Gere families works through a lifetime's friendship with Edward R. Payne (1906-1991), the Payne's second son of three and also an artist.
