The title of this work comes from the carved figure of Grace Darling which appears in the composition. Darling was a Victorian lighthouse keeper who achieved national fame after saving a number of people from the shipwrecked Forfarshire, which ran aground on the Farne Islands in 1838. The sculpture is typical of those made after her image in the late nineteenth-century, and closely resembles a Belgian example in ivory and alabaster in the National Maritime Museum. 

A pile of paint boxes appears to the side of this figure, including raw and burnt Sienna, as well as Naples yellow. So too an open book. All of these objects rest on top of a deconstructed easel, as the top clamp and struts can be seen on the far left of the picture. 

The picture comes in a frame of the artist's own design.
