Edith Lawrence (1890-1973)

Landscape and portrait painter, colour linocut artist, designer of textiles and interior designer in partnership with Claude Flight. Although a member of the Colour Woodcut Society, she is better known for her linocuts that were frequently exhibited at the Redfern Gallery and Ward Galleries during the 1930’s. As a pupil of Claude Flight at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, her prints are typical of the Vorticist manner in their representation of speed and movement. She studied at the Slade School of Art, 1910-14 and after two years in St. Ives, Cornwall she returned in 1916 to further her studies. She exhibited at the NEAC, RA, SWA, ROI, RSA and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Shortly before her death a retrospective exhibition of her work was held at Hull University and posthumously her work with that of Claude Flight was exhibited by the Michael Parkin Gallery. Her work is in the collections of BM, V&A and GAC. Bibliography:
