Andrew Johnson (1893-1973)

Andrew Johnson was born in 1893 and studied at studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He worked for various advertising agencies and in the 1920s and 1930s designed posters and advertising graphics for London & North Eastern Railway, Southern Railway, Eno’s Fruit Salts, Hudson Soap, Lever Brothers, ‘The Times’, General Motors, Moss Bros, Legal & General Assurance Company, General Motors, Buick Cars, Baker’s Cocoa and the National Playing Fields Association. In 1927 Andrew Johnson went to New York for eighteen months where he produced designs for J. Walter Thompson, Barton Durstine & Osborn, and other American agencies. He was co-founder (with Tom Grainger) of the poster design partnership Grainger Johnson and was a member of the British Society of Poster Designers. Johnson died in 1973.
