Joseph Alfred Terry (1872-1939)

Painter born in York and a member of famous York-based Terry's chocolate family. Terry began his studies at York School of Art and then travelled to Paris in the early 1890’s to enrol at the Académie Julian. At Julian's he worked under Bouguereau, Ferrier, Constant and J. P. Laurens. He also studied at the Académie Colarossi winning a Silver Medal Prize in 1895. After this fairly long spell of study in Paris, he returned to Yorkshire and soon established a base at Sleights, a small village outside Whitby, which was to be his home until his death. Close to Staithes and Runswick Bay, he soon became an active member of the Staithes Group exhibited with them on numerous occasions. He was a keen supporter of the Yorkshire Union of Artists and regularly showed at their annual exhibitions.
