As a student Stephen accompanied his father, the artist Muirhead bone, on trips to Spain and France.  He would later make sketching trips to Scotland, Greece and Scandanavia, often accompanied by his wife  Mary Adshead.

Bone's rapidly painted 'en plein air' sketches were the subject of  popular one-man shows at Leferve, Redfern, The Leceister Galleries and The Fine Art Society. The themes of exhibitions were typically topographical -  '41 Counties' was the subject, for instance,  of an exhibition held at Ryman Galleries in Oxford from November to December 1936.
