This sketch for what turned out to be the last of Dunbar’s and Roger Folley’s Christmas cards (she died the following year) features side-by-side activities of collecting and cutting firewood (L) enabling them to relax (R) at the fireside at Staple Farm, Dunbar’s and Folley’s house near Hastingleigh, Kent. Modelling for the figures are two boys she and Roger Folley occasionally welcomed from the Caldecott Community, a nearby children’s home, and Richard, the younger of their two nephews.

We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
