Brangwyn frequently worked 'en grisaille' (black and white oil) when producing  work to for magazines such as the Graphic, or Illustrated London News to which, early on in has career, he contributed a great number of images. The medium allowed the artist to work rapidly, often on the on the spot, and was ideally suited to reproduction in black and white.  This grisaille was created as an illustration for Gilbert Parker and others, Tales of our Coast, 1916
