This wood engraving was based on a drawing of the same date and was used as a frontispiece to Engravings by Eric Gill with a preface by the artist, printed by the Fanfare Press, London and published by Douglas Cleverdon, Bristol in 1929. Gill is wearing a version of the paper hat traditionally worn by stone masons.

Produced  in 1927 in a limited edition of ten prints one from the same edition is in the collection of Tate Britain. 

An edition of 400 (unsigned) prints were also issued.
