It is likely that this image was conceived for Brockhurst's entry for the 1913 Scholarship in Decorative Painting to The British School at Rome. Colin Gill won the scholarship and Brockhurst was the runner-up.



The composition has elements in common with  Piero de Cosimo A Satyr mourning over a Nymph in the National Gallery which might have been a source of inspiration.
