Literature: Gardeners’ Choice, by Evelyn Dunbar and Charles Mahoney, with a previously unpublished preface by Edward Bawden and with a new afterword by Christopher Campbell-Howes, Persephone Books, London 2015. The vignette, on page 26 of Gardeners’ Choice, shows one of two women showing the other something; the right-hand figure has some resemblance to Dunbar herself, and if this is so her companion may be her mother Florence or her aunt Clara Cowling, who lived in some state and in a magnificent garden at Steellands (later re-baptised Apsley Court) in Ticehurst, East Sussex.
