Exhibited: Evelyn Dunbar - The Lost Works, Pallant House Gallery, October 2015 - February 2016, cat 125. Literature: Evelyn Dunbar - The Lost Works, eds Sacha Llewellyn & Paul Liss, July 2015, cat 125, page 176; Evelyn Dunbar: A Life in Painting, Christopher Campbell-Howes, October 2016, page 297. This is the first Christmas card sent jointly after Dunbar’s marriage to Roger Folley in 1942. Dunbar continued to design Christmas cards, often with original texts by Roger Folley, until 1959, the year before she died. Dunbar wrote of it: ‘Our first Christmas card. At that time Roger was in the R.A.F. and Evelyn an official war artist, so the symbolism is obvious. The distant peaks, one imagines, are meant to suggest the brief “leave” periods in the Lakes or Yorkshire fells.’

We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
