Daly's life-long friend the artist John Ward considered him to be one of the most brilliant draughtsmen of his generation comparing his immaculate little pastels to those of  the 18th-century Swiss master Jean Etienne Liotard.  Inspite of this Daly, according to Ward, "wasn't interested in public recognition and had to be bullied to show at the Royal Academy."
