The cheapest accommodation in cities such as Paris were in the chambre de bonne on the top floors. Happily for artists not only did these have the best light conditions, which made them  ideal for studios, but had the best vantage points, perfect for observing  changing weather conditions and capturing the ever changing panorama of Metropolitan life.
