In this composition  Charles Mahoney  artfully explores  several of the themes artists are preoccupied daily -   the artist as creator and the relationship between nature and artifice. The thistle that Mahoney paints himself  reaching out for is in fact  one of his own paintings, not a thistle; and his hand is also a painted hand, (painted by the hand of the artist that we cannot see here because it is engaged on creating this very work.
