Meredith and Kitty Monnnington, Evelyn Monningtons brother and sister in law, had a cottage in Suffolk, where Tom and Evelyn frequently went to stay. John Monnington recalls : I don't think it was very big and I recollect that whenever Tom and Evelyn went to stay their visit was usually cut short with a disagreeable row with Kitty, who, I imagine, resented any disturbance to her routine. She was unbelievably lazy and always used to preface any utterance with a long sigh! My reason for telling you this is that I expect Evelyn went upstairs to the visitors bedroom and did this little painting which looked along the corridor at the head of the stairs, so that she could escape from Kitty's sighs. No doubt Tom had escaped to the garden for the same reason! Email to Paul Liss 11.2.07
