This painting depicts the tedium of a British Sunday afternoon.  Im many households the Sabbath was the only day when the front room was used - not infrequently for the family tea. The model is the artist's daughter

The painting makes interesting comparison to another Bush painting in which a window view is also also central to the composition in the collection of Regent Street Polytechnic
