John Tonks was a sculptor who was born in Dudley, West Midlands. He studied at Birmingham School of Art, 1945-46 under William Bloye and at Wolverhampton College of Art, 1948-51. He exhibited at University of Birmingham in 1974 and his commissions include 'Virgin Mary' for St. Mary's Church, Enville in Staffordshire and a 'Risen Christ' at Wombourne Parish Church. He was an elected a Fellow of the RBS and also held the position of Vice-President of that Society.

A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the University of Birmingham in 1974.
